The third annual Streamy Awards is set to take place next Sunday, February 17th. Better know as the Streamys, the awards show honors excellence in original online programming and those behind it. “Comic/actor/writer/composer/
While the Streamys mainly honors web-exclusive programming, three network TV web spinoffs were also nominated, along with Hulu’s original series, “Battleground.” In May, I interviewed the star of “Battleground,” Jay Hayden, who is up for the Best Male Performance: Drama Streamy award. It will be interesting to see as Netflix’s “House of Cards” and Hulu’s “Battleground” move from being the exception to being the norm and whether the Emmy’s and Golden Globes will recognize their achievements. If not, we could see Streamy competition conitnue to heat up.
Here are the TV shows and web spinoffs nominated for this year’s Streamys:
A&E – Breakout Kings: Shrink Rapt – Best Derivative Series
In A&E’s “Breakout Kings,” veteran U.S. Marshals Charlie DuChamp (Laz Alonso, Avatar) and Ray Zancanelli (Domenick Lombardozzi, “The Wire”) form a special task force composed of the three most elusive convicts Ray ever captured: Lloyd Lowery, a former child prodigy and behaviorist/psychiatric; Shea Daniels (Malcolm Goodwin, American Gangster), an ex-gang banger who knows how to work the system, both in prison and on the street; and Erica Reed (Serinda Swan, Tron: Legacy), a sexy expert tracker who learned her trade from her bounty hunter father. In the webseries ‘Shrink Rapt,’ Lloyd uses the team’s cases to inspire a book, where each week he wittily muses on their most recently tracked down fugitive. His psychology training allows him to share the effects of each case on the team while his less than friendly nature lets him be brutally honest.
HULU – Battleground – Best male performance: Drama and Best Female performance: Drama
By executive producers JD Walsh, Hagai Shaham (“The Details”), and Marc Webb (“The Amazing Spider-Man”, “500 Days of Summer”), Battleground is a workplace dramedy set in the world of political campaigns. Head campaign strategist Chris “Tak” Davis and his staff strive to win a Senate seat for their underdog candidate in a race with national consequences. It takes place in Wisconsin, a real battleground state, where Tak and his team manipulate the 24-hour news cycle, new media, and social networking to navigate the unpredictable ups and downs of state politics. All the while, a documentary crew exposes the behind-the-scenes chaos of idealistic twenty-somethings trying to make a difference.
