For decades the television industry has dreamed about the Holy Grail of interactive advertising: commercials that enable viewers to pick up their remotes to get a coupon, book a test drive or enter a contest. While there have been many successful experiments so far, none of them has scaled. As we wrote two months ago, Twitter was poised to crack the code. And today, it looks like they did just that.
Xbox revealed its next-generation console today, Xbox One, featuring live TV integration and two big announcements to blur the lines between television and social gaming. “Until now the television viewing experience has been a one way experience, but that’s about to change,” explained entertainment chief Nancy Tellem. “Only on Xbox, will TV become social.”
YouTube has kicked off an interesting week of comedy programming. The video mega-platform is placing big bets on a week of comedy programming that essentially takes over the spotlight and ads of its homepage and more. This is a massive attempt to program their chunk of the internet as if it were a linear TV schedule. If successful, it could prove to be a historic moment in web video. Netflix, the streaming giant that’s about to release a new season of Arrested Development just launched a genius marketing and PR campaign that hilariously explains the binge-watching internet culture they’ve defined and invigorated. New York Magazine’s The Cut coined the term “Netflix Adultery,” the act of binge-watching TV episodes ahead of your significant other when you promised them you’d watch together. Have you been a victim of this horrendous crime? According to Netflix’s survey of 2000 American adults, “12 percent confessed to watching ahead on TV shows they were supposed to save to watch with their partners. ” Also, “ten percent admitted to being the victim of Netflix adultery, which means either 2 percent are blissfully unaware of their partners’ indiscretions, or the cheaters are hitting multiple victims.” Read more
