With NHL Deal, GoPro is Changing How We Watch Sports

GoProAdWeek reported yesterday that the NHL and GoPro have struck a deal to feature the camera’s footage throughout the coming season. GoPro, which recently IPO’d, has – along with its stunning technology – gained popularity because of user-generated POV YouTube clips.

Its first-person vantage point lends itself particularly well to helmet sports. Bob Chesterman, the NHL’s SVP of Programming, told AdWeek that the league’s two national TV partners will integrate the GoPro into game telecasts, demonstrating the shooting and skating skills of NHL players.

More from AdWeek:

If a player filmed by GoPro scores this season, NBC or Rogers can illustrate what they saw on the play by cutting to taped footage from the commercial shoot, said Brian Jennings, NHL’s CMO. The league will also feature the POV content on NHL Network and NHL.com, while GoPro will use it on its YouTube channel. Read more

Kevin Spacey Talks About the ’3 Pillars of Content’

Kevin Spacey gets it. Here’s his entire keynote speech from earlier this month at the Content Marketing World conference, where he explains to executives the “three pillars” of content: audience, conflict, and authenticity.

So being on Netflix makes him an expert? Kind of. Not just about where people are watching television, but understanding that in the digital sphere everything is social. For anything to be a success, it’s better if it starts at a grassroots level.

The whole talk is about 25 minutes long, but worth a watch over lunch (for the social marketing sights and his Joe Pesci impression).

Here’s How to Use the iPhone 6 Camera

There’s a lot to be said about the iPhone 6 and as we all start upgrading, there are a lot of benefits within the video-making and consuming industry. Today, the New York Times is featuring a video by photojournalist Todd Heisler about how to adapt to the new gear and use it in the wild.

Sometimes, the pros are the last to catch on. Expect to see better television marketing in your Vine and Instagram feeds soon.

Social Scoreboard: Week of September 22

“The Voice,” new Fox series “Gotham,” new ABC show “How to Get Away With Murder,” “Big Brother,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Saturday Night Live,” “Once Upon a Time,” and “Family Guy” rounded out the top 10.

Last season, MTV’s Northern Europe team along with Wenderfalck released the ‘Match Machine’ Facebook app, which paired fans up with their perfect match from their friend list. Dateline Celebrates Premiere with Facebook Free-for-All and Live-Tweeting

To celebrate Dateline’s season premiere tonight, Lester Holt and the Dateline correspondents will engage with fans in a pre-show “Facebook free-for-all,” followed by live-tweeting during the show.

At 8PM, Andrea Canning, Josh Mankiewicz, Keith Morrison, Lester Holt, and maybe even Hoda Kotb, will take viewer questions on the Dateline Facebook page, followed by a 15 minute break before the show.

Then, during the show, while Dennis Murphy is reporting and tweeting the mystery on the east coast, the rest of the team will also be watching and tweeting the show along with viewers. The hashtags to be used are #DontWatchAlone and #Dateline. This marks the first time ever that all of the correspondents will live tweet the show.

With SNL and Key & Peele, Sketch Comedy Returns in This Week’s Top 5 Viral TV Clips

5by_mobile_app_screenshot_304x200In this Friday’s installment of our partnership with 5by, the video discovery platform that curates the web’s best viral videos, we take a look at the top five videos of the week from the platform’s TV category.

Trending this week on social are Jon Stewart and protege John Oliver, and sketch comedy returns as SNL gears up for its season premiere and Key & Peele continue to build on their popularity.  For more on the videos selected, Theo Tabah, 5by’s Head of Content:

Jon Stewart from The Daily Show makes a rare appearance in this weeks lineup with a fantastic segment on climate change. In fact, it rivals John Oliver’s wit and delivery in his rant on the dated and atrocious Miss America Pageant. These two TV hosts worked so well together… it’s good to see they can both thrive on their own.

SNL is back this Saturday to celebrate it’s 40th season! Special guests this week include Chris Pratt and Ariana Grande. Needless to say, the promo for this week’s show is sure to get you excited for what’s to come.

SNL, an OG in the sketch comedy game, will have to keep up with Key & Peele. In their new season, their TV show as a whole proves to be a little confusing and inconsistent, but what they release online are among the best comedy skits we (and apparently everyone on Twitter and Facebook) have seen this year.

Lastly, Youtube Channel ‘Bad Lip Reading’ released an incredible dub-over of season four of The Walking Dead. These videos are always huge successes, and this one is no exception.
