Foursquare reveals record Super Bowl numbers

Foursquare offered its first universal venue for the Super Bowl, letting anyone check into the game, regardless of proximity. The result was a flood of 200,000 check-ins over 4 hours that set a record for Foursquare, despite some server problems. It also was “the largest online check-in event of all time, Foursquare says. The company released a few stats:

Beyond check-ins from all the states, Foursquare said it registered 125 countries, including 13 check-ins from the Vatican. And Packers fans outnumbered Steeler fans at every point during the game.

“We weren’t quite prepared for all the excitement,” Foursquare says, referring to the server problems. You have to wonder, however, if universal venues will become a new feature for Foursquare, especially tied to TV events.
