Next Door Media’s MyBallard.com wins Online Journalism Award: Wow, the neighborhood news site that my wife Kate and I created in the Seattle neighborhood of Ballard has won a national Online Journalism Award for community collaboration. “My Ballard is exactly what newspapers are trying to do with hyperlocal content. And these guys do it,” the judges said. “There was no site that fulfills the sense of community collaboration better. It’s the literal definition of the category.”
Our thanks to our many neighbors in Ballard who have made this site a special place. The neighborhood powers the news, and we provide the layer of journalism over the top. We also thank the editors of our other Next Door Media neighborhood sites: Doree Armstrong and Dale Steinke at PhinneyWood.com, John and Loree Schoonover at MagnoliaVoice.com, Thea Chard at QueenAnneView.com and Heidi Eng of FremontUniverse.com.
And finally, we’d like to also thank Tracy Record and Patrick Sand at the West Seattle Blog for the inspiration to create My Ballard. They were the first in the country to create a true community-powered news site, and they deserve more credit than us. In many ways, this award is a stamp of approval from a respected journalism organization for neighborhood news sites everywhere.
Of course, we weren’t the only ones to win an Online Journalism Award, such as NYTimes.com, BBCNews.com and one of our favorites, Publish2. Here’s the complete list.
