Google debuts new simplified ads for local businesses: The “Listing Ads” appear in Google Search and Maps — only in San Francisco and San Diego to start — based on category and location. And in a new twist for Google, they’re sold as a monthly fixed fee. Advertisers can also use a free phone number that Google provides to track phone calls. Since many small businesses have been confused with buying search ads, the idea is to make this ad and the buying process as simple and painless as possible. Smart.
