RightThisMinute: When citizen journalists become TV producers

RightThisMinute, a joint venture between Cox Media Group, Raycom Media, E.W. Scripps Company and MagicDust Television, is a daily TV show devoted to finding the best viral videos and the stories behind them. Think Tosh.0 and TMZ (former TMZ and EXTRA executive producer, Lisa Hudson, is one of the executive producers) often with more serious videos.

To find the best viral videos before they “go viral,” RightThisMinute has unveiled a new personalized web and mobile platform, “My Channel,” which allows citizen journalists to work alongside the show’s staff. The platform enables viewers to submit videos that they’ve captured or produced themselves for broadcast consideration. If a viewer’s video gets picked up for broadcast, they have the opportunity to be interviewed on air as behind-the-scenes insiders.  Below is an example of a viewer, whose video was picked up, joining the program to discuss the story behind it.

The recently updated RightThisMinute app for Android and iPhone allows users to upload videos from their phones, while discovering other user-submitted videos and RightThisMinute content. As citizen journalists continue to find a variety of outlets besides Twitter, the RightThisMinute has potential to become a great medium for those who capture videos on their phones.
