The ubiquitous disks (mailed out seemingly dozens of times per household from AOL) went into production 30 years ago, back when they represented a major uptick in storage and convenience. Crunchgear reports that demand for the discs peaked 15 years ago, but Sony kept pressing on. Hitachi and Mitsubishi stopped making floppies last year.
