New Series and Seasons Abound in This Week’s Top 5 Viral TV Clips

5by_mobile_app_screenshot_304x200In this Friday’s installment of our partnership with 5by, the video discovery platform that curates the web’s best viral videos, we take a look at the top five videos of the week from the platform’s TV category.

Trending this week is a host of clips all either added this week, about a new series, or about a new season. For more on the videos selected, Theo Tabah, 5by’s Head of Content:

Late night TV clips continue to make for viral videos as hosts coax celebs into doing wacky things, speak their mind or poke fun at serious issues. Jimmy works out with The Rock, John Oliver blows our minds with some disturbing American prison stats, and 14 year-old’s performance on Australia’s Got Talent will certainly go through the social media share cycle.
We’re also seeing more and more YouTube stars get big-time deals, and paving the way is ”Epic Meal Time” – a popular miniseries that involves dudes, ridiculous recipes, and usually bacon. It was offered a TV show and naturally, they released their entire first episode for free online. Finally, another teaser was released for the 5th and final season of Boardwalk Empire, which is gearing up to be the best yet.

It’s All About the ESPYs in This Week’s Top 5 Viral TV Clips

5by_mobile_app_screenshot_304x200In the this Friday’s installment of our partnership with 5by, the video discovery platform that curates the web’s best viral videos, we take a look at the top five videos of the week from the platform’s TV category.

Trending this week is a host of clips from the ESPYs, ESPN’s annual sports awards show. For more on the videos selected, Theo Tabah, 5by’s Head of Content:

The ESPYs aired this week and it was incredible. Ordinarily, a show that dishes out sports achievements might not dominate TV and online video, but the combination of inspiring stories, and Drake as MC made for a buzzworthy topic across the Internet. Also, we had to include something a little outside the box, simply based on how badass of a performance this woman gave.

Stuart Scott sparked some serious inspiration with his incredible battle with cancer over the years, Drake’s imitation of the legendary Manny Pacquiao singing ‘Let It Go’. This years best female athlete unexpectedly went to MMA Fighter Ronda Rousey! Yes, she beats other women up for a living. And for the outlier, Kacy Catanzaro makes TV history by being the first woman to qualify for the finals of American Ninja Warrior (there’s no ESPY Award for that?). Her performance tallied an impressive 6 million views on Youtube in four short days. Overall, this year’s ESPYS set the bar for future award shows – both in broadcast and online buzz.

Late Night Reigns Supreme in This Week’s Top 5 Viral TV Clips

5by_mobile_app_screenshot_304x200In the next installment of our partnership with 5by, the video discovery platform that curates the web’s best viral videos, we take a look at the top five videos of the week from the platform’s TV category.

Trending this week is a blitz of videos from the increasingly crowded late night television field. For more on the videos selected, Theo Tabah, 5by’s Head of Content:

The biggest names in late night TV are continuing to make their presences known both on the small screen and second screen. Let’s face it, why stay up until midnight to watch 45 minutes of interviews, monologues and commercial breaks when all of the best clips are shared the next day for free, online (and on 5by!)?

John Oliver is crushing it week after week, Fallon, Kimmel and Letterman all pumped out incredible viral clips, and the latest addition to the late night game, Seth Meyers, gets news host Brian Williams to admit his TV guilty pleasure. They don’t call it the “late night war” for nothing. Read more

Reading Rainbow and Boardwalk Empire: A Look at the Week’s Top 5 Viral TV Clips

5by_mobile_app_screenshot_304x200In the third installment of our weekly partnership with 5by, the video discovery platform that curates the web’s best viral videos, we take a look at the top five videos of the week from the platform’s TV category.

Trending this week is the return of ‘Reading Rainbow,’ a ‘Boardwalk Empire’ teaser, and the news that Walter White may return via ‘Better Call Saul.’ For more on the videos selected for this week, Theo Tabah, 5by’s Head of Content:

Whenever a TV show comes out of retirement, you’re almost guaranteed a following will re-emerge (cue the Jack Bauer fan clubs). Case and point: Reading Rainbow. This 90s favorite is making a comeback with one of the most successful Kickstarter campaigns ever, so get ready to see Levar Burton back in action soon. Other shows to watch in the coming months are the final season of ‘Boardwalk Empire’ and John Oliver’s show ‘Last Week Tonight,’ which is picking up social steam as his hilarious bits go viral.

Another trend we’re seeing is the power of the guest appearance. ’Better Call Saul’ - the ‘Breaking Bad’ spin off - is rumored to have some Walter White appearances peppered throughout the series which will definitely reel in faithful viewers itching to get their ‘Breaking Bad’ fix. ’Orange is the New Black’ also just picked up extras from ‘Law & Order,’ so you may see some familiar faces in the next season. Samuel L. Jackson and Pornstache: A Look at the Week’s Top 5 Viral TV Clips

5by_mobile_app_screenshot_304x200There is a lot of great video content on the web – the problem is finding the right thing to watch. 5by, the video discovery platform acquired by StumbleUpon in September 2013, solves that. 5by founder Greg Isenberg wanted to surface the best web videos based on a user’s moods and preferences to eliminate the guessing game associated with searching for videos.

In a LinkedIn Influencer post about Isenberg and the ‘Anatomy of a Million Dollar Idea,’ Isenberg tells writer J.T. O’Donnell: “I was trying to find an app that would serve me content based on my mood and preferences. Similar to music apps like Pandora or Spotify, I wanted to be able to sit on my iPad and have short videos queued up instead of having to watch TV or manually search for them on the web. When I realized no such app existed, I immediately got started on the project to create one.” Read more

Why 5by Sees Vice, Tribeca, and Defy Media Partnerships as ‘Win-Win’

StumbleUpon 5by Partner Channel Launch

5by, a video discovery app, recently announced media partnerships with VICE Media, Tribeca Enterprises, and DEFY Media. 5by allows users to find, watch, and share web videos and, rather than search for content, the app creates playlists based on ratings and a user’s mood. Along with the media partnerships, 5by also announced that both its iOS and Android apps are now compatible with Google Chromecast.

“5by is all about recommending and delivering the best videos. VICE, Tribeca and DEFY Media are some of the best video content creators and through our collaborations, 5by users can navigate those channels to watch freshly curated video playlists,” 5by CEO Greg Isenberg tells Lost Remote.

VICE, Tribeca, and DEFY will have partner channels and will be curating custom video playlists. The experiences will appear to 5by users either on the home screen or as channels depending on the time of day and on individual preferences.

“Partner channels are a win-win: 5by users are introduced to great content, and partners build new audiences and increase views,” Isenberg added. “We’re excited to work with additional creators, publishers and brands to realize this mutually beneficial vision.”
