HLN and Twitter Partner for New Programming, Social Initiatives

HLN, which rebranded itself earlier this year as the “first TV home for the social media generation,” has partnered with Twitter, HLN EVP Albie Hecht and Twitter news chief Vivian Schiller announced today.

More about the partnership will be announced today at CNN/HLN’s advertising upfront, which Lost Remote will be at, but the preliminary details feature the TV network and social site creating an original program to visualize Twitter data in new ways on-air.

The teams will work to broadcast these visuals across TV and digital platforms simultaneously; an example will be Robin Meade‘s “Morning Express” program in the form of trending segments.

The teams are also creating a “Tweet DVR,” which will save the best live tweets from TV premieres and play them together with digital and TV replays of the same show.

Politics will also come into play: HLN and Twitter will look to find the most important issues to voters driving them to the polls for this year’s midterm elections, and parlay that information into new sponsorship opportunities across platforms.

HLN President Albie Hecht on Putting Social Storytelling In Front of The Camera

Albie 304As we reported, HLN intends to become the new TV home for social media. We spoke with network president Albie Hecht today about the new HLN.

“I always look for the white space, a place where there’s an audience being underserved to try and build a brand around,” Hecht said, suggesting it has been young millennials who haven’t been served by TV news and there’s an ad-friendly space available for HLN to differentiate themselves from the competition.

It comes down to being available for young social media users, Hecht says: “If there’s nothing there for them, they’re not going to go there,” adding that the new HLN offers young people a potential second or third screen option.

Outside of targeting a younger audience, Hecht notes the challenge to change a news business that hasn’t altered its format for decades.

“To be able to change the way TV news is presented…we want to do that by actually showing the process of social media newsgathering and putting that in front of the camera instead of in back of the curtain.” Read more

As part its full rebranding, the network will be curating its news from across social platforms and blogs, and highlight the most trending, viral stories while pointing out those social users creating the most buzz.

“While others report on the conversation, HLN will be a part of it,” said @AlbieHechtHLN. “Just as MTV was adopted by a disconnected target audience that was underserved by television, HLN will be the first TV home to embrace the social media generation and champion its interests.”

That quote right from the channel’s chief provides a subtle hint: when is the last time you’ve seen a press release identify a network president by Twitter handle? Read more

HLN to Become The ‘Social Media Network’?

HLN300x197Cable news networks have amped up their use of social media in 2013, but HLN is gearing up to become the “social media network.”

Network president Albie Hecht is in Atlanta for a 2-day network meeting with all production staff, our-sister site TVNewser reports, brainstorming ways to translate the immediacy of social media to HLN’s screen.

In the beginning, Headline News, as it was then called, consisted of half hour newswheels. More recently it was known for wall-to-wall court coverage of the Casey Anthony and George Zimmerman trials.

But in an interview with Capital New York Monday, CNN Worldwide president Jeff Zucker hinted at moving away from the Court TV model: “It’s not as strong a business proposition, and it’s not really what advertisers are looking for,” said Zucker, noting the huge ratings draws that trials can bring. Zucker adds, “If we wanted to be in the court business, Time Warner would have kept Court TV.”

What would the “social media network” look like? Could hosts, producers, and bookers take their story cues from social media users? Will HLN look to its reporters and producers to break news, or empower social media to be the citizen digital journalists?
