Social TV results from Inauguration Day

In a little over one hour, there were 1.1 million tweets about this year’s Inauguration Ceremony. This is compared to just 82,392 tweets about Obama’s first Inaugural in 2009. continued…

TV networks see record breaking traffic to websites during election night

A year later, TV networks have taken this advice and are now seeing record breaking results to their main dot coms. Election night was proof of that and here’s why. continued…

At 11:18, after some magical swipes by CNN’s John King on their magical election wall, the network declared the President Obama had won the electoral votes he needed to get re-elected. Three minutes earlier, the president declared victory with a signature “-bo” tweet. continued…

Social TV results from the third presidential debate

Twitter, Bluefin Labs, SnappyTV and more were all reporting on the results and what we can learn from the social web. The interesting analysis will probably come after the election takes place, but for now here are the highlights from the third debate on foreign policy. continued…

Univision hosts Romney and Obama for 'meet and greet' on Facebook

The social TV election continues to grow. Before the first traditional debate has taken place between President Obama and former Governor Romney, Univision is hosting a “meet and greet” for each candidate, which is being streamed live on their Facebook page right now. Tonight the former governor is taking the stage in Miami and tomorrow night President Obama will. Here are more details about this “first of a kind” partnership with Facebook to make this social web event possible. continued…

MTV's VMAs makes giant social TV splash, trumps DNC

Should President Obama and Mitt Romney have vied for a spot at the VMAs instead of their conventions? According to Bluefin Labs, the VMAs were the “#2 all-time most social televised events at 12.8M comments (just shy of the Grammy’s at 13M but ahead of the Super Bowl at 12.2M)”. Trendrr concluded the “VMA’s were the most social tentpole event of 2012,” not including political events. Here are the details.

Even in an election year that will determine the status of our economy, MTV’s VMAs have proven they can get social web more excited about the one of the biggest nights in pop culture over the political process. “The VMAs were more social than last night’s DNC broadcast (which only had 2.5 M comments),” according to Bluefin.

Trendrr’s data puts the 2012 VMAs ahead of the Grammys and the Superbowl in terms of total social interactions (on Twitter, Facebook, Get Glue, and Viggle) and shows that the daily activity skyrocketed from 5,567,954 last year to 19,175,032 this year. Women made up 71% of all social interactions, and 53% of the tweets originated from mobile devices. Trendrr also discovered that most social markets around the VMAs were NYC, LA, Chicago, Atlanta, and Miami respectively.

Here’s an infographic from Bluefin Labs…

Inside look at CNN and Facebook's first election analysis

In July CNN and Facebook announced a major partnership around the election. “America’s Choice 2012″ is an analysis of Facebook’s more than 160 million users in the U.S. and CNN’s multi-platform audience. Their first big report is out and we spoke to Michelle Jaconi, CNN’s Executive Producer of Cross-Platform programming about the results.

The major headline of the new announcement is that Ryan has knocked Obama off as the most talked about player in the election. While this isn’t completely surprising, seeing as the big announcement just happened last week, it’s great to see the Facebook data back it up. It’s also interesting that Biden is number three after Obama, but before Romney. In the report, which can be accessed on CNN.com, they also look at the candidates Facebook growth. Obama’s in a strong lead with 27.8 million likes, but Ryan already has over 100,000 more likes than Biden. You can also see how the candidates likes breakdown by gender.

Lost Remote: How is CNN approaching publishing content from this partnership?

Michelle Jaconi: The partnership is truly cross-platform, taking advantage of one area in which both CNN and Facebook dominate: Reach. The partnership has a robust mobile app, editorial content and interactives online, and on television, as well as CNN’s Political Gut Check daily newsletter.

The Paul Ryan announcement was a great example of using technology to help tell a story instead of the reverse. We surveyed our Facebook users and integrated their live comments and feedback into our on air broadcast, while noting the political region most active surrounding the announcement.

LR: How is it a new social kind of reporting?

Jaconi: It is new mainly because there is no way we could do this in 2008 with the same penetration rate. There are 160 million monthly active users on Facebook in the United States. In 2008, there were 35 million monthly active users in America.

In layman’s terms: Facebook has now half of the US population in its networks. If that isn’t interesting politically, I don’t know what is? Especially when you take into account that people are most often influenced to vote by opinion leaders in their social circle, it makes this partnership intellectual candy.

Furthermore, this has been accurately called the first mobile election, and in politics that is what makes this interesting. It is always my goal to get out of Washington and learn from the American voter; and this allows us to engage and listen to American voters wherever we are.

LR: How many more of these stories will there be?

Jaconi: Facebook will be integrated into all our big convention, debate and election broadcasts and will be a consistent part of the digital story from here thru the election. As for the sweeping analytical pieces, we will write about the data every time it helps us tell a story.
