Social TV commercials: AT&T on the decline, CGI animals on the rise before the Super Bowl

If you didn’t know, we have a weekly editorial partnership with Bluefin Labs, who was acquired this week by Twitter in one of social TV’s biggest announcements of the year. Despite having the most tweeted about commercials once again, AT&T saw a 24% decline in chatter compared to last week, as other brands narrowed the gap. It will be interesting to see if AT&T gets back to the #1 spot again, especially with the tendency for brands to run successful Super Bowl commercials months after the big game. On AT&T’s tail this week is Geico, with a popular commercial featuring a CGI pig. Not to be outdone, Kia’s CGI hamsters are back, helping catapult Kia back into the top 10 this week. continued…

It’s still not complicated: AT&T continues to top social TV commercials chart

It’s no surprise for Nike and Red Bull to be among the top three brands of this week’s social TV commercial chart. But AT&T has been in the top three for most-talked about commercials for the past month, and has done so without the celebrity power of Nike, which rose this week with commercials featuring Kobe Bryant, Tiger Woods, and Rory McIlroy, three of the most popular athletes in the world. Some commercials drive negative chatter, but 16% of the 10,000 tweets about AT&T’s “It’s Not Complicated” ads featured the word “love.” continued…

‘It’s Not Complicated’: AT&T’s ads top the social tv commercial chart

For last week’s edition of Bluefin Labs‘ most talked about commercials, we see that AT&T, Pepsi and Progressive are at the top of the chart. With a 191% gain week-over-week, AT&T has launched into the number one spot with its brilliant “It’s Not Complicated” ads. The buzz confirms that AT&T has a hit on its hands. The moderator of the focus group in the commercial is Beck Bennett, who has a YouTube series called “Fresh Perspectives.” Fresh Perspectives is like The Daily Show with Bennett as Jon Stewart, and kids as the correspondents. This is a great move by AT&T and creative agency BBDO Atlanta to take Bennett’s act national. continued…

Each week Bluefin will be sharing their “top 10 social commercials” analysis exclusively with Lost Remote. The future of social TV is dependent upon the economics that have helped the TV industry thrive for over sixty years. As social platforms change the way brands can interact with potential customers through TV, so do their commercials. Here’s our first look at the most social commercials.
Social TV highlights from the 64th Annual Primetime Emmys

Updated: Hill Holliday has correlated Bluefin’s data with the linear ratings and determined that “While there is a ratings peak at the time of the stunt, it’s very similar to the other peaks throughout the Emmys airing” and that the stunt “possibly”could have helped increase viewership. Another Emmys have come and gone, which means that the fall TV season is about to kick into high gear. Last nights awards felt a bit like the Modern Family Awards Show, although Jimmy Kimmel’s hosting was exceptional. Homeland also did extremely well and Hatfields & McCoys brought home a few well deserved honors. Louis C.K. was also a big winner bringing home two Emmys. What were the social TV highlights, besides of course, Tracy Morgan’s mega successful stunt? Trendrr and Bluefin Labs have reported the following. continued…

'The X Factor' premiers with social TV buzz and improved app

The X Factor on Fox started its second season with a big social TV splash last week. According to Bluefin Labs, the show had seven times more social TV buzz than The Voice premiere had last Monday. Anticipation has been wild for the new season ever since Britney Spears and Demo Lovato were announced as new judges. The show has also launched some exciting new features for their app that premiered last season. continued…

Exclusive: The most social commercials and brands on TV

Social TV data company Bluefin Labs made a bold move in the social TV space by launching a version of their analytics geared towards brands back in April. A big trend we’ve seen this past year has been the consistent appearance of major brands investing in and experimenting with social TV. Boston and New York based Bluefin Labs has provided Lost Remote exclusively with their “Social TV Brand-scape,” a detailed look at the most social brands, TV commercials and sponsorships in the first half of 2012.

Click for a larger view, and scroll below for analysis and an interview with Bluefin’s Tom Thai:

The most social brand (based on the number of social media comments) goes to Apple, a brand that’s long invested in TV but not really in a social strategy. Sundrop Soda is in the lead for both commercial and sponsorship in large part due to their integration with the Billboard Music Awards. Anheuser-Busch wins for the Superbowl, Pepsi for the Grammys and J.C. Penney for the Oscars. The analysis also includes the most social industry sectors and brands who have aired the most commercials.

We also spoke with Bluefin’s VP of Business Development and Marketing Tom Thai about their impressive data business.

Lost Remote: How do you use data centers? How does the encoding, programming of the data you use work? Where do you license the video from?

Tom Thai: You’ve actually touched on one of the key differentiators between Bluefin Labs and other social TV analytics companies. A basic way to analyze social TV is to look only at the social media data, Twitter, Facebook, etc. But using the basic method, you don’t know essential things about the TV world, such as (for example) “When did that Weight Watchers commercial air on TV?”, “Which networks did the commercial air on?”, and “What were people Tweeting about when they reacted to the Charles Barkley Weight Watchers commercial vs. the Jennifer Hudson Weight Watchers commercial?”

Since we wanted to go beyond the basic approach, we had to build out specialized hardware and software to enable that. This is where the data center comes in. We operate satellite dishes that sit on the roof of an enterprise data center. We have a partnership with DIRECTV that gives us access to satellite feeds of linear TV. So think of this as a giant DVR that’s working 24×7.

LR: How does Bluefin capture commercial video and then compare it to social?

Thai: That’s the specialized software part. Getting a 24×7 feed of the TV world is just the start. In order to recognize all the commercials on TV, we needed to write specialized video fingerprinting and “ad detection” algorithms. (Or have humans watch TV 24×7 across all TV networks and manually make note of the commercials that run. Obviously, that’s not scalable.)

The video fingerprinting and ad detection software is an extension of the work that Bluefin Labs co-founders Deb Roy and Michael Fleischman did at the MIT Media Lab. At Bluefin Labs, we’ve been working on and improving this technology since 2008, when Deb and Michael started the company.

Once we know when and where commercials run on TV, matching TV up to social media is just a matter of automated semantic and temporal analysis.

LR: Any examples of brands you’re working with?

Thai: Sure, some that I can mention publicly include Kraft Foods, PepsiCo, and Mars. We can’t talk about the others publicly, but we have brand clients spanning various industries, including Retail, Entertainment, Financial Services, and CPG.

LR: Anything else?

To make all of this theoretical stuff more concrete, we put together a Social TV Brand-scape poster that covers data for the first half of 2012. The poster includes info on which brands have commercials that drive the most social buzz, which brands air the most commercials on TV, and more.

Olympic athletes with the most social buzz [infographic]

As the major TV event that is the Olympics continues to roll out, athletes are getting more individual exposure than any other previous games. Which athletes are getting the most love on social and why? Bluefin Labs put together an infographic that looks at data that goes beyond just when people are tweeting while watching TV, but a look at buzz around the entire event.

Not surprisingly Phelps tops the list, but take a look at the graphic (below) to learn about some other interesting athletes worth following that you might not of heard of. It’s also interesting to see that basketball, the sport that contains players with enormous social followings (like @KingJames) is only number five on the list of popular sports after swimming, diving, gymnastics and soccer. Soccer makes sense, since only in the U.S. is soccer a secondary sport, but it’s amazing to see how much attention these other amazing sports are receiving.

Michael Phelps is the #1 athlete with the most social buzz, commanding a 31.5% share of Twitter and public Facebook chatter among the Top 38 athletes tracked.

Top 3 athletes that women love to comment about in social media: (1) Tom Daley, (2) Gabby Douglas, (3) Jordyn Wieber.

Top 3 athletes that men love to comment about: (1) Yohan Blake, (2) Lolo Jones, (3) Tyson Gay.
