YouTube and the Future of Cable News

ihqcv07ssoxueuepz1gcAnother month, another article about how Jeff Zucker intends to reshape CNN. Oh, and another one.

Linear TV ratings are down across all major news networks, and as Kenneth Estenson, senior vice president and general manager of CNN.com, tells the New York Times, “In many ways, digital is the entry point to the CNN brand now.”

Digital numbers for news networks look much better, and CNN in particular is now “the third most trafficked news and information digital outlet in the United States.” Reaching audiences across platforms – when so many people are turning to sources like Twitter for news consumption – is a large part of why CBS News is available on Roku, and ABC News on Apple TV.

Another way that news organizations are reaching viewers is on YouTube. Tubular Labs – a Silicon Valley-based video intelligence and marketing analytics company that aims to measure all digital video engagement across multiple platforms – analyzed the top ten news organizations on YouTube:

Each week, the series focuses on a different angle -  “Sex, Drugs, and Rock N’ Roll” and “The War in Vietnam” among them – but tonight’s episode will explore perhaps the most memorable moment of one of history’s most memorable decades: ‘The Assassination of President Kennedy.’

How CNN Journalists Are Leveraging Newstron for High-Level Reporting

cnn-logo_304x200While many networks are focused on developing client-facing social apps, CNN has created Newstron, an internal platform designed to harness the power of news traveling through digital and social for the benefit of its journalists. The platform is wholly designed and developed by Turner, and has been available to CNN’s editorial staff for over a year.

One of the newest tools introduced within Newstron is StoryTracker, which presents content (from both CNN and outside sources) to editorial users in an easy-to-consume way. According to Michael Koetter, SVP of Media Technology and Development at Turner, the tool drags in video, Instagram posts, text, tweets, URLs, and 10 to 13 different supported objects. The end goal of the platform is to make it easier for CNN journalists to do the initial legwork on a story so that they can direct more of their energy towards high-level reporting.

CNN to host ‘PoliCast’ during tonight’s State of the Union Address

cnn logo_304x200President Obama is set to make his fifth State of the Union Address tonight and news organizations will be competing for viewers before, during, and after the speech. While social activity may not be as pronounced as it was during President Obama’s three debates with Mitt Romney during the 2012 presidential race, viewers will certainly be turning to Twitter to offer and glean reactions.

As part of its coverage plans, then, news organizations must consider not only how to hold the attention of its linear audience, but also how to engage with its digital audience. Last year, CNN accomplished this with a #TweetOfTheUnion page on CNN.com, which allowed users to track in real-time the reactions to the address by members of Congress. Read more

What does the long, long, tail of Twitter mean for social TV?

Social-TV“Twitter is giant, and it has an outsize influence on popular and not-so-popular culture, but that influence seems due to the fact that it’s popular among influential people and provides energetic reverberation for their thoughts–and lots and lots of people who sit back and listen.” A new report by Jon Bruner of O’Reilly Radar concludes that though Twitter is a behemoth in both size and influence, many of its users are inactive.  Read more

As the events in Boston unfolded, the world turned to CNN.com

We wrote about the amazing numbers CNN Digital posted as a result of the Pope Francis announcement. Still, CNN is a go-to news source for both celebratory and tragic news, and  the events in Boston were of major concern to not only Bostonians but also to people all over the world. As events unfolded in Boston, CNN Digital had its most successful week ever in terms of page views, topping 808 million, followed only by the week of the 2008 Election which resulted in 665 million page views.
