Dateline Celebrates Premiere with Facebook Free-for-All and Live-Tweeting

To celebrate Dateline’s season premiere tonight, Lester Holt and the Dateline correspondents will engage with fans in a pre-show “Facebook free-for-all,” followed by live-tweeting during the show.

At 8PM, Andrea Canning, Josh Mankiewicz, Keith Morrison, Lester Holt, and maybe even Hoda Kotb, will take viewer questions on the Dateline Facebook page, followed by a 15 minute break before the show.

Then, during the show, while Dennis Murphy is reporting and tweeting the mystery on the east coast, the rest of the team will also be watching and tweeting the show along with viewers. The hashtags to be used are #DontWatchAlone and #Dateline. This marks the first time ever that all of the correspondents will live tweet the show.

‘Dateline’ Facebook Contest Winner Goes Behind the Scenes in NYC

Dateline-NBCIn May, after becoming the first newsmagazine to reach one million Facebook likes, ‘Dateline’ hosted a contest on its Facebook page. Entrants would have the opportunity to represent the million during a trip to New York, where they would be able to go behind the scenes with the ‘Dateline’ team. Fans just had to write why they are the most loyal viewer.

Kim T., the contest winner, arrived in New York last week and she and her guest ‘photobombed’ Lester Holt at a taping last night, attended a ‘Dateline’ story meeting, sat in on edits, and cheered on the ‘Dateline’ softball team. The two are documenting their experience on Twitter with hashtag #DivasDoDateline.

Kim created @DatelineDivas, a Twitter account with over 1.3k followers that evolved organically from her interactions with ‘Dateline’ correspondents and loyal fans of the show. BlogHer noted in a 2014 article that ‘Dateline Divas’ was taking “interactive viewing to the next level.” Kim and her group of “divas” live-tweet during the show each week and regularly interact with Keith Morrison and Josh Mankiewicz. Kim also uses her personal Twitter account @kimt205 to tweet poems about her ‘Dateline’ “hobby,” as she puts it, and track Josh Mankiewicz’s ever-changing collection of pocket squares. Read more

To celebrate the occasion, Dateline is hosting a contest on its Facebook page. The show wants to bring one Facebook fan to New York City to represent the million. To enter, fans have until May 19 to write in the comment section of the post why they are the most loyal viewer and should be the one to represent the million fans. The winner (and a friend) will have the chance to go behind the scenes at Dateline. Fans have between now and May 19 to enter. Read more

Exclusive: NBC News launches 'Dateline Chatline' to make broadcast more social

When Dateline first launched on NBC News back in 1992, it was unclear whether this TV news magazine would fail after so many other NBC attempts had tanked. Now in it's 20th season, the network is launching "Dateline Chatline", a major social TV initiative aimed at merging "all viewer discussion surrounding Dateline into one easy-to-access, user-friendly online site..."
