‘Sharknado 2′ Draws Mix of Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down, Laughs, and ‘WTF’s’

Sharknado-Infographic_V3As expected, social media went absolutely bonkers for “Sharknado 2″ last night, with 581,000 total tweets penned around the sequel, according to Nielsen’s Twitter ratings.

And our analytics partners, Canvs, looked further into the sentimements of social users watching the shark thriller. They measured the most buzzworthy and reacted-to moments of the movie, which aired on SyFy network.

Wil Wheaton, who helped popularize the first “Sharknado,” took Twitter by storm. His handle generated the most overall reactions from fans (as well as 22% “WTF), but “Today” show weatherman Al Roker generated the most “best” reactions. And the surprise Billy Ray Cyrus cameo generated  a 50% “best” reaction, 24% “funny” reaction, and 26% “WTF.”

Here are some other insights from Canvs and an infographic:

-Al Roker bested Matt Lauer in the reaction popularity contest. Lauer was the third most mentioned cameo, eliciting 619 reactions, 53% of which said he was the “best.” Roker on the other hand garnered 901 reactions with his name and 778 with his handle (@alroker).

- Audiences enjoyed a surprise cameo by Jared Fogle, aka Subway Jared. 29% of reactions about Jared mentioned that it was “funny” he appeared in the film.

-Andy Dick is just “scary.” The comedian was the only celebrity to receive a sizable “scary” response (29%).

How Are Two of TV News’ Facebook Newbies Faring?

FacebookTVFacebook got two new high-profile members this week from the television news world.

“Today” host Matt Lauer and Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly both joined.

Lauer had a two-day head start, joining Tuesday; Kelly hopped onboard yesterday.

So far, Facebook is “liking” the Fox News anchor most: Kelly is up to 168,500 likes in less than 24 hours, while Lauer’s page sits at 74,000 likes.

With This New Morning TV Star Joining, is Facebook No Longer Cool?

He says he doesn’t like to rush into things, but after 10 years, NBC “Today” host Matt Lauer has finally decided to join Facebook.

“As Savannah [Guthrie] now tells me, Facebook is no longer cool because I’m joining,” Lauer joked in his first Facebook post, a video announcing that he’s joined the social network.

Twitter CEO Trying Improv to Lure Female TV Stars to Twitter

Dick Costolo and Matt Lauer.jpg largeTwitter CEO Dick Costolo told NBC “Today” host Matt Lauer that he might dig into his improv roots to lure some of TV’s biggest female comics onto Twitter.

“I would say it’s the collection of female comedians,” Costolo said. “Melissa McCarthy, it’s Tina Fey, it’s Amy Poehler.  I should be able to use some of my pull from my Chicago improvisation days to get a few of ‘em onto the platform– and I’ll make that my goal.”

In his first interview since his company went public earlier in the year, Costolo talks to Lauer about Twitter’s power, what he sees as the “cardinal sin” of tweeting, and dealing with being the oldest guy in the room at a predominately younger company.

NBC News asking viewers to submit their #DreamDay

NBC News has launched an interactive campaign tied to the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington, and Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I have a dream” speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.
