The social reaction to 1600 Penn: strong cast, but not quite Modern Family

So far, 1600 Penn, NBC’s answer to Modern Family, has received very mixed reviews (Metacritic currently has it at a 55 out of 100). NBC released the pilot of 1600 Penn back in December, and Networked Insights (NI) has been able to capture the social reaction to the show in the month leading up to the national premiere. While fans are drawn in by the show’s strong cast, they have been balking at the comparison to Modern Family. Here are the highlights from NI’s report. continued…

2012 takeaways: sports and SpongeBob dominated social TV [infographic]

NBC paid nearly $1.2 billion for the rights to cover the 2012 London Olympics. While that sum seems exorbitant, Trendrr‘s Second Annual Year End Stats Report proves that it was worth every penny. According to the report, NBC was the most engaging network in 2012. Minus all sports and special-programming, though, Fox would have taken the title. continued…

This summer we broke the news about Dateline Chatline, the show’s new social platform for connective viewers with tweets, anchors and more. Tonight, in honor of the premiere of their 21st season, they’re sending Josh Mankiewicz, who’s been with a correspondent on the show since 1995 to a viewer’s home to watch the show with him. We interviewed Mankiewicz about how they used social to pick the lucky winner. continued…

The most anticipated new fall TV shows are…

Networked Insights has just released a new report on “the most anticipated new TV shows based on viewer conversation across the social web.” The report looks at the most anticipated shows from the five major broadcasters (CBS, NBC, FOX, ABC, CW) and describes why they’re making predictions about certain shows. Networked Insights said that “this year’s analysis was more challenging due to factors indicative of an evolving marketplace” and that “overall, the conversations were less polarizing because the new programs were either modeled after successful shows or had benefited from a halo effect of a well-known showrunner.” Here are their findings.

The report is a follow up to their detailed and useful insights into the TV upfronts that we published back in May. Here are some of the highlights from the report, which is fully embedded below.

NBC Revolution: Giancarlo Esposito is more of a draw to viewers than J.J. Abrams

FOX The Mindy Project: Show is very quotable and relatable to viewers

ABC Last Resort: Andre Braugher is a major draw for the show

CBS Elementary: Fans positively reacting to the Watson character’s gender swap

CW The Carrie Diaries: CW fans are optimistic the show has what it takes to see a second season

The results are in: how the Olympics did on social [infographic]

In addition to Twitter’s announcement on the biggest moments, Bluefin Labs have released their analysis from London 2012. “The Olympics telecasts on NBCU networks were more social than the Super Bowl, Grammys, Oscars, Golden Globes, and all 7 games of the World Series combined, registering 36.0M social media comments,” according to Bluefin. “Plus during the 17 days of the Olympics, 82.6M social media comments were generated in total about the Olympics, its athletes and its sporting events.”

Here are the details followed by an infographic.

It’s not a surprise that the Olympics were such a big success on social, but it’s definitely interesting and exciting to see which moments resonated the strongest. What will this mean for the Olympic advertisers four years from now? What will it mean for regulations on social and how athletes are allowed to use the tools? Will social finally bring an end to the tape delay in Rio? Here are the highlights plus the infographic.

Olympics Social TV Wrap-Up

–The Olympics telecasts on NBCU networks were more social than the Super Bowl, Grammys, Oscars, Golden Globes, and all 7 games of the World Series combined, registering 36.0M social comments compared to 32.7M social comments.

–During the 17 days of the Olympics, there were 82.6M social media comments about the Olympics, its athletes and its sporting events.

–In addition, the athletes participating in non-team sports with the most social buzz included:

**Michael Phelps, who recorded 21.3% on the comment share, at 4.2M social media comments

**Tom Daley, who recorded 21.0% of the comment share, at 4.2M social media comments

**Usain Bolt, who recorded 16.7% of the comment share, at 3.3M social media comments

Closing Ceremony Social TV Metrics

– 2.7M total social media comments about the primetime broadcast

– 11.4M social media comments about all Olympics-related topics for the full day of August 12, 2012

– Social TV commentary spiked when the Spice Girls took the stage for their reunion performance and the group received about double the social comments as One Direction, who performed earlier in the show.

– Other top moments that drove social TV commentary included: One Direction’s performance of What Makes You Beautiful, Russell Brand’s appearance, the video of Freddie Mercury and performances by Brian May and Jessie J.

The biggest moments of the Olympics according to Twitter

The Olympics has ended, and Twitter is sharing the biggest moments that occurred across their platform. If you remember, Twitter struck a deal with NBC to curate content for the event. Additionally, visualizing and curating tweets throughout the games has been a major part of the second screen Olympics. Now the platform has released some of the biggest moments from the Games that occurred in 140-characters or less.

The blog post, published yesterday by Andrew Fitzgerald Twitter’s Manager of Editorial Programming, states that they “saw more than 150 million Tweets about the Olympics over the past 16 days.” The biggest moments during actual competition ended up being “Kobe Bryant’s dunk towards the end of the USA-Spain basketball game, and Hope Solo’s (@HopeSolo) land-diving save in the women’s USA-Japan soccer match.” With Bryant’s worldwide fame, it’s not a surprise his big play in the game resonated so strongly.

Calculated in Tweets per minute, here are the biggest moments overall:

-Usain Bolt (@UsainBolt) of Jamaica wins gold in the 200m sprint: 80,000+ TPM

-Bolt wins gold in the 100m sprint: 74,000+ TPM

-Andy Murray (@andy_murray) of Great Britain wins gold in the men’s tennis singles: 57,000+ TPM

-Jamaica wins gold and sets the world record in the men’s 4×100 relay: 52,000+ TPM

-Team USA beats Spain to win gold in men’s basketball: 41,000+ TPM

However, last night’s Closing Ceremonies may have set the high water mark for the Games. Twitter’s TV department highlighted the Spice Girls performance, which inspired more than 116,000 TPM.

The Spice Girls = 116k TPM and more Olympics in review: blog.twitter.com/2012/08/olympi…

Finally, here are the most discussed athletes from the games, according to Twitter:

1.Usain Bolt (@UsainBolt)

2. Michael Phelps (@MichaelPhelps)

The most 'Shazamed' moments of the Olympics

Now that the Olympics are slowly but surely winding down, the companies that have invested in making this the most social and digital event in the competition’s history are beginning to release digital and social data. NBC Sports released their most live streamed clips earlier this week, and now Shazam is coming out with their most “Shazamed” Olympic moments.

Shazam was one of the first social TV players to announce an Olympics partnership with NBC, enabling viewers to use their Shazam apps to “tag” coverage and commercials. Today, they’ve even announced (but have yet to tweet about it from @Shazam) that they’ve reached 5 billion total tags since they launched in the early iPhone days, an impressive milestone. They’re not releasing the breakdown between TV and music tags, but to be fair their TV growth is much more recent.

Here are the top moments that have been Shazamed during the Olympics. As they pointed out to us, notice that swimming has been especially popular:

The 10 most popular Olympics live streams so far

With the Olympics halfway over, NBC has begun to release the success of their digital properties, which includes live streaming of all the games on their iPad apps. The web changed completely between 2008 and 2012, enabling a more social Olympics who’s coverage can be found way beyond the TV screen. Here are details on the NBC Olympics digital success.

The results are in for NBC’s digital footprint for the Olympics. Here are the main stats:

75 Million Total Videos Streamed, Up 182% vs. Beijing in 2008

34 Million Live Streams, Up 333% vs. Beijing

744 Million Page Views, Up 160 Million from Beijing

NBC Olympics Live Extra & NBC Olympics apps Peaked at No. 1 & 2 as Top Free Apps for iPhone & iPad on App Store

6.2 Million Devices Verified by Cable, Satellite and Telco Customers

Regarding NBCOlympics.com’s mobile website, the total unique viewers for the 2008 games were 2.8 million and for London 2012 there have already been 5.2 million, proving smartphone penetration. The NBC Live app has already had 7 million unique users and the NBC Olympics app has had 2.7 million.

The announcement on their successes, made on Friday were missing any stats on social. No word of the progress of their partnerships with Twitter or Facebook or how many people have been sharing content to the social web from their social outlets. Here were the most live streamed clips, all destroying of course the one 2008 clip that made it to the list:

How the world is using social media around the Olympics

Let’s not forget the Olympics are a global TV event and that NBC’s innovations and sometimes frustrating decisions are only one part of the 204 nation event. After just a few days, it’s already clear how drastically social has affected the Olympics. With the games underway and the world tuned in, we looked into some of the other countries’ efforts to bring the games to social and the second screen. Here’s what we found.

International Olympic Committee:

The IOC’s own Facebook page has over 3 million likes and their Twitter has 1.4 million followers. They’re hosting live video and chats on their page and have partnered with Facebook for “Explore London 2012“, a simple and beautiful guide to the games. There’s also the Olympics Athletes Hub, a part of Olympics.org giving a chance for athletes to stay in touch with their fans on social and for fans to easily search and find their favorite athletes.

United Kingdom:

Not surprisingly, the host of the 2012 games is going big with social and the second screen. They’re promoting a number of different London 2012 apps that include results and the official mobile game. They’re also reporting on the social success of the games in roundup posts and have Twitter and Facebook accounts.. The BBC is the official broadcaster of the games. They’ve launched smartphone apps (below) but don’t seem to have an iPad companion. They also have dedicated Twitter and Facebook pages for the games.

Australia:

The official broadcasters of the games are The Nine Network and Foxtel. The Nine Network’s digital presence is almost identical to the now extinct MSNBC.com. NineMSN.com, a join venture between the network and MSN is the main destination for the TV network. A third level domain within that site is devoted specifically to the linear network. In honor of the Olympics, they’ve launched the “Social Games“, a way for fans to compete with each other for points and badges by participating in trivia and sharing content across the social web. On the second-screen front NineMSN launched Jump In an iPad app with a Twitter tracker and updates on the games. The Foxtel app streams all eight channels and allows you to record games on your set-top box remotely.

Canada:

CTV, the broadcaster of the games in Canada has also made social a big part of the experience. On their site they feature what’s trending on social at the moment and are also promoting #CTVOlympics. Their “Ultimate Fan” social app (below) looks and feels very similar to the NineMSN experience giving fans the chance to use social to rise on a leader board. Samsung is sponsoring this social experience. They also have second screen apps that feature live streaming of the games and social.

China:

The previous host of the summer Olympics is taking social and the second screen seriously. Weibo, the nation’s Twitter meets Facebook competitor, has launched a Farmville-like social game for the Olympics. This massive social experience (below) is sponsored by China Mobile and Suning Electronics. The app was developed in partnership with RedWorks Bejing, an arm of advertising giant Ogilvy & Mather. CCTV is broadcasting the games in China.

France:

France Télévisions is the official broadcaster of the games. On their official Olympics website they’ve included a Facebook social experience sponsored by Asics, that allows you to automatically share content on your Facebook timeline with an on/off switch.

Israel:

Israel’s IBA station is airing the games and the contract detailing their rights to air is available here. The contract even includes a section on “new media revenues.” This Olympics marks the 40-year anniversary of the 1972 Olympics in which terrorists killed Israel athletes. IBA is featuring a commemoration on their website. Instead of developing apps, they’re promoting a QR code on their website and Olympic Facebook page that will take you to a mobile optimized website for information on the games.

There are 197 other nations participating in the games. Let us know about other social TV and second screen activations that the official broadcasters are using to promote the games.

A big thanks to Liz Duval (@LizardSocial) for her research for this post.
