Top social TV moments from another record-setting Oscars

It goes without saying these days that another big live event has set another social TV record. Last night’s Oscars was no exception, attracting 13.2 million social interactions, up 197% from last year’s event, according to data from Trendrr. This makes it the third most social TV event on the year, behind the Super Bowl (52 million) and the Grammys (17 million). According to early Nielsen numbers, the show scored a 19% increase over year’s Academy Awards ratings.

The second screen: your backstage pass to this year’s Oscars

By now, most people know that Seth McFarlane will host the 85th Academy Awards this Sunday night. But as Joan Rivers proved, the pre-show and all happenings behind-the-scenes are just as important to viewers. This year, actress Kristin Chenoweth, Entertainment Weekly Managing Editor Jess Cagle, and Good Morning America’s Lara Spencer will host the official pre-show, and each made the announcement via Twitter. Also, in a big surprise announcement, Robin Roberts also tweeted that she would be making her return to TV to help co-host. continued…

Oscars falls short of social TV records Super Bowl, Grammys

Updated: Despite what seemed like a million social media and second screen integrations (see our list of the best Oscars social media moments), last night’s Oscars fell well short of the social TV records set at the Super Bowl and the Grammy Awards. Trendrr gave it a 4.2 million social activity score (and 3.9 for the red carpet show), compared to 17.5 for the Super Bowl and 17.1 for the Grammys. Bluefin Labs measured 3.8 million social media comments for the night, compared to 13 million for the Grammys and 12.2 for the Super Bowl — but still, that 3.8 million is up 293% compared to last year’s Academy Awards (infographics below.)

Ratings-wise, Nielsen said the Oscars had a 25.5 rating and 38 share — up 4% over last year.

GetGlue says it measured 170K check-ins across the Oscars — it offered 10 stickers this time — setting a new record over the Super Bowl (160K). Last year, the Oscars attracted 31K check-ins (infographic below). And according to Trendrr, there were more than 88k people checked into Viggle, 85% of which participated in a live interactive experience, according to Trendrr’s tracking.

Mass Relevance says two moments peaked in “tweets per minute:” Hugo wins for Best visual effects (23,624 TPM) and when Octavius Spencer won best supporting actress (23,575). Also, Meryl Streep came away with the most social mentions (126,447) and Jessica Chastain won the #bestdressed category (2,892).

We’re still waiting for numbers for Twitter, which said last night tweets peaked when the documentary “Undefeated” won the Oscar and the producers dropped the F-bomb on state (which was muted.) Interestingly, this doesn’t match up with other data we’re seeing (Mass Relevance, Bluefin Labs and Trendrr). Meanwhile, TiVo said these are the top five most TiVo’d moments of the Oscars:

1. Cameron Diaz and Jennifer Lopez presenting (and a potential wardrobe malfunction from J-Lo)
2. Robert Downey, Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow presenting
3. Meryl Streep wins the Best Actress Award
4. Octavia Spencer receiving the award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role
5. Tom Cruise announces “The Artist” as Best Picture

Here are infographics on the night from Bluefin, Trendrr and GetGlue…

Best (and worst) social TV moments of the Oscars

This year’s Academy Awards on ABC was infused with social media and second-screen experiences, top to bottom. So much so, we were juggling apps and devices — three different hosted live streams during the red carpet show — which was a bit out of control. While the show didn’t offer many (if any) smashing viral moments, there were some terrific second-screen developments and a few memorable social media tidbits.

(Update: The Oscars falls well short of social TV records Super Bowl and Grammys)

Best on-screen Twitter integration goes to…

Last year, it was news when the #Oscars hashtag appeared on the screen. This year, that’s par for the course, but a red carpet Twitter integration caught our eye. Users were asked to tweet with #bestdressed and the name of the celebrity to vote for their favorites. Every 30 minutes or so, the red carpet hosts announced the top three, in a simple bottom-third graphic (below). It was easy, clean and consistent with the show. There have been hashtag votes in other shows before, but I think this illustrates how you don’t always need a big trending dashboard thing to make Twitter a valuable interactive element of a show.

Biggest Oscars publicity stunt…

“Part of me thought he’d be up to something,” Ryan Seacrest said live on E! after Sasha Baron Cohen, dressed as “The Dictator,” dumped fake ashes on him. “When someone asks what you’re wearing, you’ll tell them Kim Jong Il!” Cohen yelled. Other than the fashions, this stunt was the subject of many red carpet tweets.

Oscars moment that turned into a Twitter account…

There are two, actually…

Less yelling, please. RT @PatSandora: CAN WE PLEASE FIX THE TINNY AUDIO, OSCARS?!

— Oscars Audio Guy (@OscarsAudioGuy) February 27, 2012

Look at the leg!

— Angelina Jolie’s Leg (@AngiesRightLeg) February 27, 2012

Biggest social media disappointment…

Billy Crystal didn’t tweet during the show. And for some, Billy Crystal was the disappointment.

#oscars: enjoy the show, will tweet after. Thanks for your good thoughts. Billy

— Billy Crystal (@BillyCrystal) February 26, 2012

The best second-screen experience goes to…

There are a few winners here. During pre-show, we liked the IntoNow experience (below) that gave users the ability to “like” or “dislike” fashions by displaying photos (with about a 5-10 minute delay) from the red carpet. After you voted, you could see how others reacted.

During the show itself, the Oscars app provided multiple backstage live streams and a hosted experience, too. We found it distracting during the show — unless there was a particular winner we wanted to track backstage (after all, producers cut off people after about 30 seconds at the microphone.) For example, when the emotional Octavia Spencer left the stage, we watched as she made her way backstage, could barely talk into the “thank you” camera, then went to the press room for more. You could watch in a six-screen split (our favorite) or watch the ticker to see what was happening on various cameras. Very well done.

Also during the show, Viggle surprised us the most. The TV rewards app provided a slick real-time poll (below) that’s one of the best second-screen experiences we’ve seen. Perfectly in time with the broadcast, Viggle asked for predictions the moment a presenter approached the stage. It locked the votes seconds before they were read. Then it displayed the winner (awarding points accordingly) moments after it was announced. In each case, it prompted the user with a sound effect — the sound of a projector — which could be disabled easily. During other moments, it served up trivia questions (and you could get hints via Bing searches — yep, it was sponsored Bing.) All in all, the points all added up to real rewards.

On the conversation front, Twitter wins again. Twitter’s owned apps and Twitter.com may not be perfect, but they’re still better than other second-screen apps with Twitter clients for posting tweets. And definitely better than other second-screen apps running on their own discussion platform that have yet to gain any scale — those apps weren’t empty rooms this time, but the quality of discussion was dramatically lacking. This time, Twitter even pulled together its own list of live-tweeters for the show — probably not the last time we’ll see Twitter organizing content production (instead of just platform technology) around live events.

The best new second-screen feature is…

Umami rolled out a feature before the Oscars that’s one of the best we’ve seen on the second screen: a simple way to “screen grab” an image of what you’re watching on TV and sharing it with your friends (below). Umami lets you sync with the broadcast, then click “freeze frame” to choose from several images snapped from the broadcast over the last 30 seconds or so. Pick one, then share it out with your friends. Snazzy.

Weirdest second-screen moment is…

At one moment during the red carpet pre-show, I was watching three live streams at the same time — all hosted by different people — on TV, online and the Oscars app. And at one point, Milla Jovovich was “live” on two separate streams at once. Hmmm.

The worst Tweeting award goes to…

SPOILER ALERT: Tina Fey is about to appear on the #Oscars!

— The Academy (@TheAcademy) February 27, 2012

During the show, the official account @theAcademy tweeted gems like this one. Over and over again. (Spoiler alert? Now if it tweeted who won several minutes in advance, THAT would be a spoiler.) Not to mention, the upcoming presenter was already teased minutes before on TV, and in this case, Tina Fey had already been on the air for several minutes by the time it appeared in my tweet stream.

Any others you’d like to add?

Your social media guide to the Oscars [preview]

Updated: The Super Bowl social TV numbers were off the charts, then the Grammys — by one measure — unseated the big game as the most social event in TV history. And with the Academy Awards this weekend, media and social TV companies are gearing up for another huge event. We’ve gathered (and we’re still adding to) the most comprehensive social media preview for Sunday’s show:

- The Oscars is bringing back the Backstage Pass, a second-screen experience on Oscar.com and free apps for the iPad and iPhone. It will have even more goodies: 20 cameras between the red carpet and the show itself, and plenty of social stuff. This year, you can watch along with the show in two modes: “direct” allows you to pick any camera vantage points inside the theater during the show and zoom in to whatever action you want to see. And “watch” mode lets you enjoy a hosted second-screen experience on the red carpet and backstage. A ticker will tell you what’s happening on various camera positions.

- What’s Trending’s Shira Lazar will be back hosting the second-screen event, this time with Sherri Shepherd, Cameron Mathison and Jake Whetter — they’ll be tweeting along, as well. During the red carpet event, you can tweet a question directly to the hosts using the hashtag #RedCarpetQA. Or you can point out your favorites with #bestdressed. Both in the app and on Oscar.com, you can dial up a “buzz” section featuring the latest tweets from insiders, “movie moments” and all tweets hashtagged #Oscars. It also displays trending topics, ranked by tweets per minute (or TPM, as the cool kids say.)

- The Oscars teamed with up Facebook to enable fans to make their predictions before the show, sharing their picks with their friends. As the show airs, the picks will be graded live and compared against their friends. (It’s not TV, but it’s worth mentioning that I’m a big fan of the New York Times’ Facebook Oscars Ballot. One of my favorite Facebook integrations for any news site.)

- Oh, and the Academy will be live-tweeting from a few official accounts, as well. Follow @TheAcademy for a behind-the-scenes look, @OscarInterviews with insights from the press room and @OscarGoer that will take you into the theater as if you’re attending the ceremony yourself.

- Overwhelmed yet? We’re just getting warmed up here. For the first time, Twitter has assembled a “live-tweeting cast” that will keep you entertained as you watch (interesting that Twitter has organized the group, which illustrates its growing role in emphasizing its value as the second screen experience). “Watch the Oscars unfold on Twitter through the eyes of our live-tweeting cast tuning in along with you and sharing exclusive Oscars commentary you won’t see anywhere else,” Twitter explains. The list of 14 includes Eva Longoria, Randy Jackson and red carpet host Nina Garcia. Twitter has also compiled a list of nominees, presenters and other Hollywood names.

#Oscars are a few days away. Tonight I might tweet winner of best supporting actor. Really, who can stop me?

— Billy Crystal (@BillyCrystal) February 23, 2012

- Not to mention, host Billy Crystal plans to be active on Twitter as well, even during the ceremony itself. You may remember, he announced via Twitter that he was taking over hosting duties a day after Eddy Murphy quit the role. He’s been tweeting away ever since, cracking pre-Oscars jokes.

- ABC’s Good Morning America will hold a Google Hangout during the show with a select few — producer Gianna Toboni will be representing — and the show has asked G+ followers why they should be a part of it.

- Umami TV is rolling out an interesting new feature just in time for the Oscars. Called “FreezeFrame” (above) it lets you grab a photo of what you’re watching on TV — the iPad app synchronizes to the show — and share it with your friends. “Not unlike Pinterest for the web, users can now share imagery of their favorite moments, actors, recipes, products and more, in real-time, while they watch,” Umami explains. The company also rolled out “Dishboard”, a new social TV dashboard that serves up a real-time infographic of sorts, illustrating how many people are talking about the show. You can also see the most interesting tweets and add your own.

- Yahoo’s second-screen play, IntoNow, says it’s pulling out the stops for Sunday. You’ll be able to rate the fashions on the red carpet with thumbs up/thumbs down, predict the winners, participate in synchronized polls (while seeing where you stand against your friends), see synchronized companion content about the show and participate in discussions with your IntoNow friends.

- The loyalty app Viggle (which just acquired Loyalize) says it’s planning another “Viggle LIVE” event, just like the Super Bowl, that will feature real-time trivia, polls, and voting related to the award predictions and Oscar nominees. Once checked into the show, users will be able to earn bonus points for every engagement – up to 10,000 points! Viggle says more than 160,000 people have downloaded the app to date with a total of 3.5 million check-ins and $50,000 of rewards redeemed. By the way, Viggle is also holding a Twitter contest for movie tickets on Sunday — follow @Viggle for more.

- GetGlue is asking fans to also check in before the big event for a series of pre-show badges “See as many nominated films as you can to level-up from Viewer to Critic to Aficionado before the show begins,” GetGlue explains. In all, GetGlue is offering 10 stickers this year, and you’ll also be able to check into GetGlue straight from Oscar.com.

- The second-screen startup ConnecTV — which just launched with hundreds of partner TV stations — promises to be “the best second-screen Oscar experience ever.” ConnecTV says it’s compiled plenty of companion content which “doesn’t just include fashion – even though we’ve definitely got some fashion tid bits coming your way – it also includes in-depth coverage of all the celebrities and movies.” ConnecTV is available online or as an iPad app.

- As we wrote about yesterday, Los Angeles station KABC has partnered with Trendrr to integrate trending social coverage on-air and online. Lots more details here.

- And what about those commercials? Advertisers are paying $1.7 million a pop despite the fact ratings have been in a long decline. One of the ads planned for Sunday evening will be for Samsung’s upcoming “smart interaction” TV (above) that responds to voice and motion commands (it was unveiled at CES.) “The Oscars are totally aligned with what home entertainment consumers are passionate about,” Peggy Ang, vice president of marketing communications, told USA Today. The set will cost $2,000 to $3,500.

- NMincite has measured social buzz leading up to the show, and it found that The Artist and Hugo are far and away the most-talked-about movies nominated for Best Picture (above). Among the categories, Best Picture rules the conversation (44%) with Best Actor in a Leading Role (19%) and Best Actress in a Leading Role (13%) following behind.

Phew! We’re still receiving emails and press releases with more Oscars plans, and we’ll update them here throughout the day. Then make sure you’re following @lostremote on Sunday as we point out some of our favorite social TV moments, and we’ll post a big wrap-up here on LostRemote.com soon after the show.

The Oscars go social with Shira Lazar's 'What's Trending'

The Oscars producers are finally figuring out that you don’t necessarily need young hosts to be hip on the social web. The team behind the Oscars seems to be developing simple and effective ways to partner with already existing influential communities. First a video in partnership with Funny or Die and now a 5-part web series with Shira Lazar’s What’s Trending show.

Called Oscar Dailies, they’ll feature an “all-star lineup of film experts…including Mashable Entertainment Editor Christina Warren, YouTube Star Michael Buckley, The Hollywood Reporter’s Scott Feinberg, Leonard Maltin, Entertainment Weekly’s Dave Karger and G4′s Chris Gore.” The online show What’s Trending says it has “20 million weekly Twitter impressions and over 100,000 video views per week.”

We caught up with Lazar at NATPE who explained the importance of this partnership to the social TV component of the Oscars. “ABC is doing a whole 360 experience with their digital experience and interactive app available on iPhone and iPad, which actually won an interactive Emmy last year, and will continue to bring fans unprecedented access to a dozen cameras on the red carpet and even inside the Kodak Theatre and the Governors ball,” she explained. “In terms of ‘Oscars Dailies’, we are creating two live-streams (a nominations special and an Oscar preview) in the style of What’s Trending that use Twitter and other social tools to bring in the buzz surrounding the Oscars online and to interact in real time with our online audience,” she added. “We’re also producing panels around the best actor, best directing and best picture categories including previous Academy Award winners sharing their Oscar memories and favorite movie moments.”

New content will be available each Thursday. Here’s a clip of our interview.

Oscars.com gears up social efforts for 84th Annual Ceremony

Ever since the whole Eddie Murphy debacle that ended in Billy Crystal trending into a role as host, we’ve been unsure what to exactly expect from the 84-year-old awards. While the Oscars and their Academy will never lose importance, there’s definitely a sense of excitement around wanting things to change. After two young hosts didn’t turn out so well (Franco even quit Twitter after the Oscars) Billy Crystal is tweet-announcing and getting involved in some cool antics early on.

While you might think of the Oscars as old-school and a bit stuffy, they’ve actually made a YouTube promo video with Funny Or Die. They’re doing a great job at continuing to play the truthful angle, that Billy Crystal hasn’t really been in the starlight for awhile but is still very cool. The second I watched the following clip, nostalgia kicked in bringing me back to 1998′s infamous My Giant, where Crystal ends up in an Eastern European cave.

They also disclosed their second-screen plans for Oscars night on February 26th. “On Oscar Sunday, February 26, Oscar.com will have live cameras strategically placed everywhere from the red carpet to backstage and even the Governors Ball, providing the ultimate insider’s view before, during and after the show,” their release said. “The cameras will broadcast online, as well as on iPad, iPhone and iPod touch,” as well. On the social side, they’ll be tacking buzz on the website. “Oscar Buzz, the site’s social media page, will track real-time comments from fans using #Oscars and #OscarBuzz.” This visualization is powered by Mass Relevance.

Billy Crystal to host Oscars after trending on Twitter

It’s official, Billy Crystal will be hosting the Oscars. The actor and comedian hasn’t hosted since 2004 but is generally remembered by all ages as one of the best hosts of our time. Crystal made the announcement on Twitter less than thirty minutes ago, in a pretty funny way:

After the news came in yesterday that Eddie Murphy would no longer be hosting as a result of the messy firing of producer Brett Ratner. Instantly, Crystal started trending on Twitter. Yahoo! even reported he was trending. Did newly crowned producer Brian Grazer recognize how the social web was reacting to what’s been looking like a decline of the Oscar brand? It’s definitely a good move, one that Oscar fans will joyce over and see as a crowdsourced win. It also seems like Crystal’s already leveraging his presence on Twitter and seems to have made the tweet himself from an iPad.

From ratings to tweets, the Oscars numbers are in

Updated: This year’s Oscars broadcast fell 10% in the ratings over last year, drawing 37.6 million viewers, according to Nielsen. But those numbers are higher than the 2008 and 2009 Oscars broadcasts.

Combine those numbers with tweets, and that’s where things get interesting. TweetReach and MassRelevance say 388,717 people sent 1,269,970 tweets about the Oscars during the show — that means just 1% of Oscars viewers were tweeting about the broadcast.

But Twitter has some different numbers. During the entire show, 36.4 million tweets were sent, compared to 38.5 million for the Super Bowl, Twitter says. It looks like TweetReach is measuring tweets that mention the Oscars specifically, where Twitter is looking at all the tweets sent during the broadcast.

Meanwhile, the second-biggest spike of the night occurred when the broadcast plugged the #Oscars hashtag on air. “Even in a show as big as the Academy Awards, this technique – so simple, so low-tech – really works: put a hashtag on TV and people will start talking about it immediately,” writes Twitter’s Robin Sloan.

According to TweetReach, the biggest tweet spike occurred during the auto-tune segment with Oprah following immediately after. Here’s the TweetReach infographic on the night.

Best (and worst) social media moments of the Oscars

Like we did for the Super Bowl, here’s our list of the top social media moments of the Oscars, TV’s second biggest annual event. And like most big live TV events, Twitter took center stage. “What I like re big U.S. TV events on Twitter is how it reminds me of 70s childhood when everyone sat down to watch,” tweeted @palafo. Added @fromedome in all caps, “Twitter just saved live TV and killed the DVR.”

Without further ado, here’s the list:

- Co-host James Franco, who just joined Twitter (@jamesfranco) earlier this month, started out the show with a bang by live-tweeting behind-the-scenes moments, including this cool video he took while walking out on stage. It’s the first time an Oscars host has live-tweeted the show. Too bad his tweeting couldn’t be matched by his on-screen performance.

- Twitter peaked just after the Oscars’ open with 10,000 tweets/minute, according to E! Online’s “Live from the Red Carpet” Twitter dashboard — 1.8 million overall. (We’ll wait for Twitter to issue the official count, like they did after the Super Bowl, which peaked at just over 4,000 tweets/second.) One gripe: the E! Online page, which was powered by MassRelevance, wouldn’t always load.

- Midway through the broadcast, the hashtag #Oscars appeared on the screen.

- Our favorite social media integration leading up to the Oscars goes to NYTimes.com. You could create your own Oscar ballot, connected to Facebook, which in aggregate provided a surprisingly accurate predication of the awards (all the big categories). You could also see, for example, the demographic breakdown of everyone who voted for The King’s Speech, as well as the movies they’ve “liked” the most on Facebook. NYTimes.com also invited well-known personalities to file ballots, so you could compare your picks. The Times also live-blogged the show, integrating tweets as well as a Facebook social plugin.

- GetGlue tallied 30,000 check-ins before the end of the show, thanks in part to its integration on the Oscar.com home page. After the first hour, GetGlue said that 1/12th of all tweets about the Oscars were people checking in via GetGlue. Interestingly, those tweets included a “hat tip” to @mbusa, which is GetGlue’s sponsor, Mercedes Benz — an innovative way to include a sponsor. But not everyone liked it: “That’s sneaky, @getglue. I didn’t agree to endorse @mbusa,” said one tweet.

- For $1.99, we downloaded the official Oscars-ABC iPad app and watched a variety of behind-the-scenes cameras live with the show. For a live camera app, it was great — although we would have loved to listen to the director’s track in the control room, instead of a music track. But it introduced a challenge. Without Twitter integration, we suddenly we’re juggling three screens, instead of two. We can wait for the future of tablet apps that pull them both off seamlessly.

End the end, however, there was no real viral moment of the Oscars. No big upsets. No singular moment that everyone will talk about. And despite all the social media flying around, this year’s show will be less than memorable.

Oscars host James Franco posting on Twitter during show

James Franco just started his own Twitter account earlier this month, and he’s already become the first Oscars host ever to live-tweet during the show. Most of the tweets point to his website, where he’s posting short video clips, from backstage to the stage itself.

In one clip moments before walking out on stage, he said, “It might be bad,” when asked for his last words. But the best clip, by far, is the video Franco recorded as he walked out on stage for the first time (watch above). You may have seen him pointing the camera around, and a few minutes later, he tweeted it out. Cool stuff.

He also tweeted backstage photos with presenters like Billy Crystal and Oprah. Despite his Twitter performance, not everyone was entirely thrilled with his on-air performance.

GetGlue offers check-in stickers for Oscars

The TV check-in service GetGlue has teamed up with the Academy Awards to award official Oscars stickers. As the show gets underway, visitors to Oscar.com will be able to check in, “the first time a major event has integrated entertainment check-ins onto their website,” GetGlue explains. Of course, you can also check in via GetGlue’s mobile apps.

GetGlue is one of a handful of companies battling it out in the TV check-in space — Miso, Tunerfish and Philo — but with a bit of a broader focus: users can also check in and “like” books, movies and music. The more you check in, the more stickers you get — both virtual stickers and real ones sent to you in the mail.

In January, GetGlue says it hit a record 900K unique users with 12 million check-ins and ratings. About 25% of check-ins and 50% of the virtual stickers are shared to both Facebook and Twitter, says GetGlue, averaging 25,000 tweets and 25,000 Facebook posts shared every day.

“Collectively, check-in and sticker shares reach tens of millions of friends and followers on Facebook and Twitter,” explains a GetGlue blog post. “These messages, traveling through existing social networks, collectively create a powerful incentive to tune-in to TV shows and head over to movie theaters.”

That value proposition seems to be resonating with GetGlue’s ever-expanding list of partners, from NBC to CNN — 30 broadcast and cable partners in all. For Oscar night, GetGlue is also working with E! with a set of Red Carpet stickers.

Interestingly, GetGlue says it’s working on set-top box integrations, due out later this year.
