Social TV’s Top Shows, Actors Among Emmy Nominees

Social-TVThe 66th annual Emmy Award nominees were announced today, and some of social TV’s biggest shows and actors are among the contenders.

HBO’s “Game of Thrones,” Netflix’s “House of Cards,” and now concluded AMC classic “Breaking Bad” are nominated for outstanding drama series, along with HBO’s mini-series “True Detective” and AMC’s “Mad Men.”

For outstanding comedy series, Netflix’s “Orange Is the New Black” garnered a nomination, along with HBO’s “Veep” and newbie hit “Silicon Valley.” Long-running sitcoms “The Big Bang Theory,” “Modern Family,” and “Louie” are also nominated.

‘Orange Is the New Black’ Cast Divided on Whether Students Should Study or Binge-Watch

Fresh off its season-two release, castmembers of  “Orange Is the New Black” gave their take on whether students should be studying for their exams, or binge-watching their show.

“I don’t want people to fail or not fulfill their potential scholastically because of our show,” lead character Taylor Schilling said in response to a viewer saying she binge-watched season two all weekend instead of studying.

“I do,” Jason Biggs, who plays Larry Bloom, said. “I really don’t care about peoples’ education, as long as they’re watching our show, or any show on Netflix obviously, but mostly our show.”

Is the Selfie Dead?

We covered “Orange Is the New Black” star Taylor Schilling‘s Webby Award victory for best actress, but there was a slightly more downer moment during the awards ceremony: a memorial for the selfie.

The award show played a video memorializing the selfie, tracked by somber music as it showed less than classy selfies. Some of the images responsible for the death of the popular mobile photo-taking practice include President Obama’s selfie at Nelson Mandela‘s funeral, the “unfit mother selfie,” the “duckface selfie,” and more.

Among the big winners was Orange is the New Black’s Taylor Schilling who took home the award for best Actress. The win is another big nod for the extremely popular show about to launch its second season on Netflix. Since the beginning the stars of the show have used their own social media presences to increase the show’s popularity. Read more
